Adult Volunteer Safety Requirements

Thank you for your interest in volunteering -- it is in serving others that we can best lead them to Jesus Christ.

Any volunteer who works with children, teens, or vulnerable adults needs to have the Archdiocese-required "Essential Three" on file before volunteering:

1) a criminal background check (cost covered by the parish),

2) a signed code of conduct, and

3) a three-hour, in-person VIRTUS training session (anywhere in the Archdiocese; St. Michael/St. Albert hosts VIRTUS training a few times a year). Instructions for new volunteers to complete the Essential Three are below.

  • As a part of these requirements, there may be some short additional online training videos, documents, etc. that you may be asked to complete.

Past and Current Volunteers:

Volunteers who have already completed the "Essential Three" are now required to renew these three items every three years. VIRTUS re-certification involves watching an online video (20-30 minutes) and taking a simple quiz. It does not require retaking the three-hour, in-person course. 

  • Go to and log in with your original User ID and password. If you do not remember your User ID or cannot retrieve your password, please call the the Virtus customer service line toll-free  1-888-847-8870 or email the youth ministry staff.

  • Once you are logged in, click the Toolbox tab.

  • You should see three links highlighted in yellow: Background Check, Code of Conduct, and Keeping the Promise Alive (the VIRTUS re-certification video). Click each link and complete each item.

  • You should also take this opportunity to update your account information. If you completed your VIRTUS training as a volunteer for another parish, please change your Primary Location to St. Michael (St. Michael) or St. Albert.

New Volunteers/parents:

Click here for a PDF explanation on how to sign up! To complete your background check paperwork, sign your code of conduct, and sign up for an upcoming VIRTUS training session:

  1. Go to and click "Registration," then click "Begin registration process." 

  2. Select "St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN (Archdiocese)" from the dropdown menu and click "select."

  3. Create a User ID and Password.

  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the background check paperwork and Code of Conduct. Be sure to select "St. Michael (St. Michael)" or St. Albert as your Primary Location. If you volunteer at the parish school or another Catholic organization, feel free to add them as additional locations.

  5. Once these items are completed, you should be able to sign up for a VIRTUS class in the area.


Parent Safety Requirements

It is strongly encouraged at our parishes that any teen involved in two or more youth ministry events per year have a parent who has completed the free Virtus: Protecting God's Children training (if you have taken it once, there is no need to take it again).  This is most important for the parents of D-Group participants. 

The Virtus training is specifically designed for volunteers who work with youth or vulnerable adults in our Catholic parishes or Catholic schools and we now are asking parents to take the same training for awareness purposes.

Our request regarding Virtus training of parents is to ensure the safety of your child and all participants in Discipleship Groups and other youth events.  We value the safety of all our teens and as such, we ask parents to partner with the parish staff and volunteers in monitoring D-Group and youth ministry event activity, holding all leaders and other parents accountable, and keeping communication open between teens, parents, volunteers and parish staff about possible concerns. 

How to register for a session?

These free Virtus training sessions are mandatory for all adult volunteers in the Archdiocese of St. Paul Minneapolis as well.  Follow the "New Volunteer" instructions on this page to register for one of these sessions.
